By Michelle Miller

In the 492 BC to 449 BC, there were series of war that was fought between the person and the Greek. At the time of this war, the Persian Empire was the largest and the one, which was more potent. These bodies controlled a stretch of land that came from Egypt to India. On the other hand, the Greeks were made of some city-states like the Athens and Sparta. The cities used to fight against each other until the time that they united their force to fight against the Persia in the Ancient Greece Persia war.

The Ionians lived along the coast of the Turkey. However, the Persians conquered them. The Ionians did not like living under the new rule, and they asked for help from the Greek community. The Greek cities sent ships and weapons but the Ionians were defeated. As a way of making sure, that such an incident did not happen again, the Persian leader King Darius I decided to conquer the Greek Cities so that they can be put under control.

A king who spearheaded the fights against the Greeks came up with a massive army of soldiers that were more than the Greek army was. In the course of 490 BC, they encircled the Greek community and began fighting them. Nevertheless, in spite of the big soldier numbers that the Persians had, they misjudged the fighting ability of the Greeks. The Greeks lost their 192 soldiers but killed a number amounting to 6000 Persian soldiers of King Darius.

After the battle, the Greek soldiers ran 25 miles back to their city, which was known as Athens so that they could prevent the soldiers under King Darius I from attacking the city. This was where the origin of marathon race came from.

Ten years after this incident when the son of King Darius who was known as King Xerxes decided to attack the Greeks to avenge his father. He decided to amass a massive army that was using one thousand warships to fight the Greeks. On the other hand, the people of Greece sent only 300 Spartans led by the king of Sparta known as Leonidas.

The Greeks agreed with the Persians to meet up in a mountain referred to as Thermopylae. They planned to attack a narrow pass that was found on the mountain. The Greeks withheld their army led by King Xerxes until they figured out a way around the mountain and were behind the Greek soldiers. On seeing what had transpired, King Leonidas asked the army to run and stayed behind fighting alongside a small Spartan army. This is where King Leonidas passed on.

King Xerxes with his army continued to match. When they reached the Anthers city, they found that it was deserted as the people who lived there had fled. However, the Athenian Fleet was waiting off the cast by the island of Salamis.

The vast army of; lead by King Xerxes attacked the Athenians ship. Since they were large, they were sure of victory. However, this was not the case as the Athenian ship known as Triremes were both fast and easily maneuvered. They rammed on the side of the Persian Ship and Sunk Them. Thus, forcing Xerxes to retreat.
